Christmas greetings

Dear Keelboaters,

Christmas is a holiday for friends,
However they may be, or not, related.
Remember that the three wise kings were strangers
In search of one remote, uncanny dream.
So may we all be far more than we seem,
Together bound for dark and haunting changes,
More lovely for the loves we have created
Along the lonely paths from means to ends,
Stumbling towards that star of Bethlehem.

Merry Christmas,
Happy winds for 2010

Nov 7 - Our last day of sailing in 2009

Dear Sailing Friends,
On November 7, with a temperature close to 60 we had the luck to enjoy our last afternoon of sailing. As Brian was planning to tow his boat to the farm that late afternoon he decided to re launch his boat for a few hours of sailing as the dock was still there.

I do not know where they came from but in no time, Werner, Bill, John, Alberto , Mark and Henk showed up and the boat was in the water in minutes. Henk forgot all about the mooring rope so the boat took off on its own and Bill with his canoe was there to save the day.

I will keep you informed relating to the Winter activities.

Brad Bourn for Minneapolis Park Board

Brad is the brother of Brian Bourn, one of our Keel Boat Racers.

Was just endorsed by Minneapolis resident and former Vice President of the United States, Walter Mondale for my stance on protecting our riverfront park land from overdevelopment. I am truly honored that he has taken an interest in our efforts to protect our parks for everyone.

Results last Saturday’s Keelboat Race.

Hello sailing friends,

Last Saturday we sailed the for last race at Lake Calhoun and we where happy to see that six boats lined up for the start. After Tom set up the Olympic course, not without problems, as the wind shifted up to 60 degrees sometimes and died to not more than 3 to 5 miles per hour even with patches with no wind at all.

Brian / Alberto made the best start with Rich and his two grand children. Henk / Wenona and Rodger in close pursuit. Rich took off well and sailed on a port tack away from the fleet. Nabile with Shannon as his crew and the Richard family closed the field.

All went well until the wind died. Henk/ Wenona sailed in a hole and floated around. Just before the first buoy Rodger past Brian but he was able to take the second place again just behind Rich rounding the first buoy.

During the rest of the race we all looked for puffs and prayed for some wind to keep moving. Rich ended first, with Brian 5 seconds behind him. Rodger ended third, and Nabil became fourth before Henk and Wenona.

Now a more serious note:
From now on the race will start on time, as the judge has to set up the course on time for us to be able to race.
1) Judge blows horn 30 minutes before the start.
2) Judge gives first signal 6 minutes before the start.
3) Judge gives second signal 3 minutes before the start.
4) Judge gives starting signal.

See you all on our last race of the season Saturday September 26.
Starting time 11am.

Don’t be late.

Sunday Keelboat Race cancelled

Dear Keel boaters,

In anticipation of light winds, rain and possible passing storms on Saturday, we are planning going to host a Brunch/Lunch in front of the Boathouse instead of racing the LowKey Regatta.

And for the same reason, as winds are predicted to be light and variable, calm to very light there will be no Keelboat Race on Sunday morning.

Also, I was just now informed that the Park Board will close parkway roads around the lakes this Sunday from about 7:00 a.m. to 12 Noon due to a bike touring event. This will not only be highly inconvenient, but will also greatly curtail available parking around the east shore of Lake Calhoun.

But..........The barbecue grill will be fired up, we will have hot dogs and burgers and refreshments available for all C-Boaters, Laser and Keelboat Sailors starting from 10:30/11:00am.

Come over and have a bite.

CYC Drivers for LHYC DieHard Regatta

Greetings

For the DieHard Regatta September 19 and 20 on Lake Harriet, CYC has been asked to supply two Safety Boat Drivers Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning. This entails some taxi driving between the dock and boats, but most importantly involves driving an LHYC Safety Boat during the regatta competition out on the lake.

As has been the tradition, CYC supplies driving teams during the Spring Icebreaker and Fall DieHard regattas. LHYC supplies drivers and safety crew, and extra crew if windy, to the CYC Aquatennial Regattas in July. We want to continue this important cooperation between the clubs.

If you can help by driving a Lake Harriet Safety Boat for the DieHard, please get back to me to indicate what day or daypart you can drive. I will coordinate the drivers and schedules with LHYC. Lake Harriet will supply the boat.

Dale Borgeson, CYC PRO, will be judging the DieHard regatta in the CYC Committee Boat.

All drivers are invited to the DieHard Saturday evening party for refreshments and a very nice buffet dinner.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you can help out on the DieHard safety boat teams.

Thank you,

Tom Weigel

Next Keelboat Race- Sunday September 13 - 11am

Dear Keel boaters,

As summer comes to an end we have only a few races left, as Saturday the Lake will be full with the C. Boaters and Laser sailors our race has been set for Sunday 11am.

Saturday September 26 at 11am we are planning a fun treasure hunt race for all the family, details will follow soon.

Don’t miss this opportunity.

Rick trying out his new Keelboat:

Monday, August 31, 2009

Wow, what a race and workout last Saturday

It was great to see that we had seven Keelboats lined up for the start last Saturday morning and we all had to work hard to keep the boats under control. “White caps on the lake” it felt almost like a gale with sustained winds from 15 up to 23 knots.

Our judge Tom set up the Olympic course with great care and his boat rocked like he was dancing with the Stars.

A few minutes before the start we all tried to get to the best positions but Brian and his crew beat us all with a fantastic start and took off as never before with Rick and Marcus on his stern and Rich close behind. Henk and Wenona almost missed the start line but made it by two foot and went in pursuit of the front runners and Rodger and Nabil with his crew closed the ranks.

Unfortunately Byron had a problem with his rudder so he, his family and guests had to go back to shore to take care of their problem.

Arriving at the first buoy Rick had taken the lead and rounded buoy One first, Henk was unable to close the gap only just after the next rounding where after he took over the lead and that stayed that way until the end of the race. Rich with only his main sail over took Brian and finished second, Brian third and Rick fourth than Rodger and Nabil took the last place.

It was a first time we sailed with so much wind at Lake Calhoun and we all felt we accomplished something.

Thanks guys. See you next race at Saturday September 12.

Keelboat race #5 August 15

Last Saturday August 15th, we completed an other Keelboat race on Lake Calhoun.
The weather was great with winds gusted up to 25 knots, after Larry ferried us to our boats, four skippers lined up for the start.

We where happy to see that Brian was able to re launch his boat on time after repairing a leak. Rich had his own little problem. Rick was back with a new crew member.

We all had a good start and close together we all set course to round the first buoy.

Henk and Wenona had to work hard to keep their boat in line witch leaned over up to 40 degrees one time but where able to make distance between the rest of the fleet and kept it until the end of the race.

Brian and Alberto came in second and Rich third.

To our surprise we all saw Rick turning towards the dock as he forgot he had one more leg to go so he closed the ranks on fourth place.

We had a great race with the challenge of sailing stronger winds and had to work hard that left us all with a satisfied feeling.
Back at the dock we had our after-sail discussions of what we did right or wrong before going our separate ways.

A personal thank to our judge Dale who set up the Olympic course the way only he could.

See you at the next race Saturday August 29th.
