Follow Wyatt from February 3 during his Ocean Classroom semester

Dear Friends,

We want to thank you and everyone who helped with Wyatt’s fund raising efforts, and give you an update on the current status of Wyatt’s project:

Those of you who joined the dancers and musicians for our benefit concert at Barton Open School on January 8 helped raise $2,000 that night. Thank you!

With that $2000 added to contributions and results of earlier fund raising by Wyatt his $6,000 goal was reached, and he will be leaving for St Thomas, Virgin Islands on February 3 to begin his Ocean Classroom semester at sea adventure on the Harvey Gamage.

Again, many thanks! We couldn’t have done it without you!

2010 ... Planes land on frozen Lake Calhoun

Planes land in hot water on frozen Lake Calhoun

By PAUL WALSH and MARY LYNN SMITH, Star Tribune Staff Writers

Pilots thought they were within the law.

Two pilots landed small airplanes on frozen Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis and left the aircraft there as they walked away for lunch Monday afternoon, then were ticketed and had to wait a few hours before federal officials cleared them for takeoff.

Park Police Capt. Robert Goodsell said that the two single-engine planes were parked on very thick ice on the north end of the urban lake, and both pilots had been ticketed for landing in a city park without a permit. The planes touched down about noon on one of Minneapolis' most famous bodies of water, Goodsell said.

"The pilots are cooperative... and contrite," Goodsell said. "[They] didn't know we had ordinance against that. They were very apologetic."

Pilot Hans Meyer, of Burnsville, said he and his friend, Mike Doherty, of Le Sueur, Minn., checked with federal and state regulations and the Minneapolis city website to ensure that the landing was legal. "It was a beautiful winter day, and we wanted to see downtown," Meyer said about his choice of lakes. "It was only until we came back from lunch that we found the police weren't on board with it."

They took off about 3:45 p.m. after local officials had consulted with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Tom Hatch said that the spectacle of two airplanes on the lake outside his office caught his attention.

"I looked out my office window and saw three Minneapolis squad cars pulled up ... on the north end of Calhoun," Hatch said. "As I walked out of my office, I saw the two single-engine aircraft with skis parked on the lake.

"I went across Lake Street and asked the officers if this was a planned event, and they said it was not and landing on a Minneapolis lake is not allowed without approval." Hatch added that the officer said he had never seen such a thing in his 30-plus years on the force.

The idea of sailing the America's Cup in hyper-fast catamarans has some in the more hidebound corners of the sailing world a little cranky. That's perhaps one reason behind a rumor that some potential America's Cup racing syndicates are considering a more traditional alternative to the extravaganza planned for San Francisco Bay.

McKee's Minute: Crew Choices Keep Things Positive .                                                January 4, 2011

By focusing on the process, rather than the result, you may find a greater sense of fulfillment at the end of the day.

by Jonathan Mckee.

Enlarge PhotoMost of us race for fun, but the activity is competitive. This is a fundamental paradox of sport, and it’s especially strong in sailing. With so many aspects of the race beyond our control, we set ourselves up for disappointment when we define our success by our finish.

So, for my own program on Dark Star, I try to emphasize the process rather than the result. It allows us much more control over a positive outcome, and I’ve come to realize that the largest determinant of how we enjoy our day on the water is choice of shipmates.

How do you go about building a happy crew? I don’t pretend to be uniquely qualified in this area, but I have learned a few guidelines over the years:

Choose personality over skills. You can always teach a person to be a better sailor, but it is very hard to change personality.

Sail with family. I grew up sailing with my parents; I’ve raced with my brother for 40 years, and with my wife for 25. The bonds you create by sailing with family member are strong and overwhelmingly positive (at least for me). As my kids are getting older, they’re starting to race with us, too, which is very cool for a parent.

Rekindle old friendships. Inviting someone to sail with you for a day is a great way to reconnect or broaden a relationship, since racing allows an ideal level of meaningful interaction.

Make new friends. If someone expresses interest in your boat, invite them aboard. If one of your regular crew has a friend, have them along. If you have a co-worker that you enjoy, get them on your boat. What a great gift you are offering, and some of these people will end up as regular crew or lifelong friends.

Keep perspective. Measure success by how many laughs and great conversations you had!

The Lucky Day of Ice Sailor...... Mike Elson

Received from a friend December 2010

Henk, you would have enjoyed the one day of ice boating that we hadso far, before the snow came. The ice had just barly frosen when Mike and a friend tried out their boats on Calhoun. I went to the lake to see how it was going, just in time to see Mike go through the ice.........He was in the water hanging onto the hull, which lukily kept him afloat. They got him a rope and three guys, including Werner, managed to pull him out.

They spend the next half hour to get the boat out.

In the midst of things the police arrived and told them to come to shore. Mike, ofcourse was not about to abandon the boat, whichwould have gottenfrosen in untill spring.

They finally were able to pull it to shore where the Police gave them a lacture but didn't issue any tickets.

The adventure's never cease on old Calhoun,
and we are happy the Mike is save and well

This is how we do it in Holland
Have a great winter
Henk

Hi! We’re Erin Thompson and Byron Richard, parents of Wyatt Richard (16).

We want to remind you of our Benefit Concert, Saturday, January 8, to send Wyatt to Ocean Classroom Semester at Sea. Come celebrate with us in the New Year!

Hello, I’m Wyatt Richard,

About mid-October I got an answer to something I had been dreaming about for some time. I had an interview with a teacher at Ocean Classroom Foundation and found out I had been accepted into a four-month, high school curriculum-based adventure on a 130' sailing ship! I will be gone from February through May, 2011 and visit 8 countries as I help crew the ship from the Caribbean to Nova Scotia. It’s also a rigorous high school program based in applied studies. Sailing is my passion and this is a huge opportunity for me.

So, I'd like to invite you to a concert to raise money for my semester at sea, featuring acclaimed Twins Cities performers, including:

Maggie Bergeron

Nick Gaudette

Mathew Janczewski

Michelle Kinney

Eric Mayson

Laura Selle

Amy Behm Thomson

Gary Waryan

Please join me for an evening of performance, dessert and a small silent auction at Barton Open School, 43rd and Bryant Ave South, Saturday, January 8, from 7 to 9pm. Tickets at the door - $15 Adults, $10 Children, $40 Family. For more information about these amazing performers visit our wiki page:
